Brand History: BMW

Inception

BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) started as a manufacturer of Aircraft Engines in 1916, catering to the demand that arose as a result of the first World War. This however was short-lived as the 1919 Treaty of Versailles prohibited the production of aircraft engines in Germany. BMW changed strategy and moved towards designing & manufacturing motorcycles. The first motorcycle by BMW was the R32, manufactured in 1923

Key Milestones

For the next twenty years BMW continued to innovate in the Automotive Industry.
The BMW 328 launched in1936 was widely acclaimed for it performance and engineering. During the second world war BMW went back into manufacturing Aircraft Engines and discontinued car production. BMW facilities were heavily bombed and lead to large losses for the company.

Post the second world war BMW continued with automobile manufacturing and expanded its operations. In the 1970’s BMW launched its iconic 3 series model. This was hailed by critics worldwide and became synonyms with the brands’ identity. BMW also focused on strategic expansion during this period, acquiring brands like the Mini to expand its range. BMW also stayed ahead of the curve by launching models like the i3 & the i8, in recent years, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable mobility.
